CV Preparation
Creating your CV:
- Keep it brief and to the point (ideally 2 pages long, 3 pages max).
- It should be clear and easy to understand.
- Use bullet points rather than complete sentences.
- Never leave gaps – if you took time out or left employment, state the reason why.
- The following sections should be included:-
Personal Details:
- Full name and address.
- Email address, mobile and home telephone numbers.
Education & Qualifications:
- Name of secondary school and Leaving Certificate (or equivalent qualification); subjects studied and grades achieved (outlining honors and pass).
- Name of College/University, qualifications and grade(s) achieved.
- Any professional qualifications attained e.g. CIP, ACII, QFA, ACCA etc.
Employment History:
Start with your most recent position and work backwards in reverse chronological order. The following information should be given for each position held:
- Dates of employment
- Company name, location, job title and outline the key duties and responsibilities of each role and include any significant work achievements.
Key Skills:
- Include technical skills such as PC Applications (MS Office Suite), hardware/software and operating systems; drivers licence etc.
- Outline any relevant non-technical/soft skills, such as presentation skills, team/management skills etc.
Personal Interests & Achievements:
- This Section gives you the opportunity to show off your personality and character!
- Include sport activities, interests and hobbies that you engage in. Keep this section short.
References:
- Include at least two names and contact numbers of people you have worked for directly, or if limited work experience, provide referees from your most recent school/college.
- Make sure you obtain their approval in advance.
Cover letter:
- A cover letter is highly recommended. It is essential that you introduce your CV in the best way possible.
- Introduce yourself and state which job you are applying for.
- Outline briefly the experience and competencies you have and why you are the ideal candidate for the role.
- Sell yourself – tell FBD why they should interview you!
